Amber Sparks
Amber Sparks holds her crown in the canon of the weird with this fantastical collection of “eye-popping range” (John Domini, Washington Post). Boldly blending fables and myths with apocalyptic technologies, Amber Sparks has built a cultlike following with And I Do Not Forgive You. Fueled by feminism in all its colors, her surreal worlds—like Kelly Link’s and Karen Russell’s—are all-too-real. In “Mildly Happy, With Moments of Joy,” a friend is ghosted by a text message; in “Everyone’s a Winner at Meadow Park,” a teen coming-of-age in a trailer park befriends an actual ghost. Rife with “sharp wit, and an abiding tenderness” (Ilana Masad, NPR), these stories shine an interrogating light on the adage that “history likes to lie about women,” as the subjects of “You Won’t Believe What Really Happened to the Sabine Women” will attest. Written in prose that both shimmers and stings, the result is “nothing short of a raging success, a volume that points to a potentially incandescent literary future” (Kurt Baumeister, The Brooklyn Rail).

"As is evident from my recent reading history on this website, this book was definitely outside my usual reading material. I've been engrossed in mostly classic literature, and even my forays into more contemporary works have been somewhat comfortable choices. And I Do No Forgive You by Amber Sparks is very far from comfortable and classic, but it stands up to all my recent reading. A collection of short stories centred around female protagonists and their struggles within societies dominated by male mediocrity or downright cruelty, this collection uses the craft of familiar fairy tales, ghost stories, and science fiction to give literary prowess to the feminist struggle. A story may begin with a classic setup, perhaps a princess and her fairy godmother, but it will quickly switch to time travel, casual dating, and dumping pretentious art-student boyfriends. A very cool, cuttingly witty experimentation with subverting expectations, playing with form, and pushing a message that very much needs to be heard by men and women everywhere."
"<strong>Brilliant </strong><br/><br/>Amazing prose. I just needed more. I loved the anthology feel. Loved all of the playfulness with history, pop culture, religion, norms and all. Metaphors are like no other I’ve seen. Very unique and creative."
