"Full disclosure: I knew by page one that I am not the target audience for this book. Maybe when I was 13 this would have been the book of the week for me? It is very unoriginal for a YA book. And there was actually not a lot of ocean imagery for a book that takes place underwater. The setting felt like an excuse for ocean puns. There was really so much that took me out of the book. Bubble tea cafés? Bleaching hair underwater I normally live juvenile books but this one lacked substance "
"I really wanted to love this book. But I think what kept tearing me away from this book was that the mer-world was too built and complicated...to the point where it was hard for me to keep track of what things were and who even some characters were. (if that makes sense) Same goes for plot of the main antagonists? (Which I still don't really know who/what they are?)
I'm willing to give the second book a chance since I've seen better reviews and ratings on it, but we'll see."
"Serafina, a mermaid and principessa of the underwater kingdom of Miromara, has a coming of age ceremony to complete before her betrothal to Prince Mahdi. The ceremony was interrupted by an assassin's arrow piercing Queen Isabella of Miromara side and killing her father. With her friend and fellow principessa Meela, Sera escapes Miromara's capital which has been burned and pillaged. Now, she must find out who is behind the attack on her kingdom and, with the help of 5 other mermaids, try to prevent the rise of an evil power and the destruction of the mermaids nations world.

This was a great start to the series. The characters are interesting and the magic system, which is controlled by their voices, is really neat. The plot was fast paced, exciting and created in me an urge to immediately look for book 2, which is Rogue Wave, immediately. I am looking forward to continuing the series! My daughter will love this series when she is older! Highly reccomend to middle school aged fantasy readers."

""Deep Blue" by Jennifer Donnelly follows mermaid princess Sera who after an attack on her home must begin to team up with her closet friend at 4 others to save all their kingdoms and people.

I would give Deep Blue" by Jennifer Donnelly a 5-star review because, 1; while I know many people find this whole book cliche I really loved the whole concept of the book 2; normally I hate fiction mermaid books I highly enjoyed this one 3; I really liked how the author made up new languages just for the book like Mermish and Rurus but she also included real languages like Italian and 4; I really loved the characters and the cover."
