He was loitering around the Angels Camp mining town in California and was told the story in a worn out saloon by a bald-headed local who relayed it in a deadpan tone, with no hint of excitement or humor. When Twain sent it to a humorist friend in New York it was published in the prestigious Saturday Press, then reprinted by newspapers throughout Europe and America.
