If you broke Elena's heart, Star Wars would spill out. So when she decides to queue outside her local cinema to see the new movie, she's expecting a celebration with crowds of people who love Han, Luke and Leia just as much as she does. What she's not expecting is to be last in a line of only three people; to have to pee into a collectible Star Wars soda cup behind a dumpster or to meet that unlikely someone who just might truly understand the way she feels. Kindred Spirits is an engaging short story by Rainbow Rowell, author of the bestselling Eleanor & Park, Fangirl and Carry On, and is part of a handful of selected short reads specially produced for World Book Day.

"Rainbow Rowell does more with a short story than most authors do with a book. I’m (finally!) going to see Episode VIII tonight, and I was vibing some Star Wars themed reading material, that, you know, wasn’t actually Star Wars. This was the perfect dose of nostalgia for me, because for the longest time Star Wars was like my life. I mean, so were a lot of other fandoms (Harry Potter, LOTR, pretty much everything nerdy) but Star Wars was the first. My dad loved the original trilogy, and so we all bonded over it. I guess I just wanted to be reminded of how cool it is to have more Star Wars, even if everything else has changed. Rainbow is like the original fangirl, so this made me love her even more."
