Terry Pratchett
In the beginning there was... a turtle. Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place which might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it's carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc's very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world's first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land. Unfortunately, the person charged with maintaining that survival in the face of robbers, mercenaries and, well, Death, is a spectacularly inept wizard.

"Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic, the first in his Discworld series, is very well-written from a standpoint of language and artistry. Words flow floridly (or pungently) across the page in a way that's demonstrative of what would become an influential and respected career. Settings and lore are explored skillfully. However, the narrative and characterization are quite weak. The book seems to meander from gag to lampoon to farce in cycle until the literal massive cliffhanger ending, which is effectively retconned at the beginning of the next book in the series. It seems to me that Pratchett himself either decided that he didn't like his own ending or realized that he wasn't quite certain of how to resolve it without the will of reality-altering magic getting involved. And while I kept reading for the world building and artistry, I really didn't care what happened to the two-dimensional characters. I liked this more when I was younger. At this point, I'd say that it's a can't-miss only for its introduction to a world in which better stories will later be set. "
"Loved every bit of it."

"@sarahlong21 So I began reading the discworld books, then after finishing 10 or so I got the audiobooks for the sci-fi series called The Expanse, and finally after that, someone recommended that I listen to some of the Warhammer 40k audiobooks, and those are my favorites now! Legit at least 20 or 30 books so far and I don't even think I'm close to catching up in that timeline"
