But then people in town begin to whisper that Walter’s grandson heard a voice commanding him to kill. And that the voice belongs to a most peculiar creature: the pig named Pearl.Walter is not sure what to believe. He knows he’s always been afraid of the strangely malevolent Pearl. "Was genuinely really excited to read this one after stumbling across an insta real raving about it but I barely mad it halfway. This was also my first “horror” novel. In the first 80 pages it’s interesting but then it just gets….. slow and repetitive. It felt like I was rereading the saaaame thing every chapter. I realized I wasn’t actually trying to finish the book out of enjoyment but rather just so I could be done with it. That’s when I just had to put it back on the shelf. "
"Honestly my favorite book of all time is probably Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones, but some other favorites are American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, Clive Barker’s Books of Blood: Volumes 1-3, We Are Here to Hurt Each Other by Paula D. Ashe, and The Demonologist by Gerald Brittle."

"3.5 rounded up

Pearl is a pig with only one eye. He is highly intelligent and learns things from farmer Walter Kopple, He also has the ability to control both animal's and human's minds telepathically to do what he wants. Telling too much more I feel like would give away the plot. All I can say is that this book was bizarre!

I've never read this style of horror and I enjoyed Goblin by this author, so I decided to request this. I liked the weirdness of it and the plot was good. At times I felt like the pacing was a little too slow, but most of the time he did a good job of building suspense then flying through the scare parts. The imagery that developed from Malerman's descriptions was what took this book from good to very good along with the character of Pearl.

*Be advised there is animal death and one scene of animal cruelty*

Thank you to Del Rey, author Josh Malerman, and NetGalley for gifting me a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review."
