But the journey! It’s gorgeous waterfalls, misty rainforests, and cliff side views that you can spend hours admiring. And that is exactly how I felt about the book; the writing was gorgeous, and it meandered around Doors like windy roads. But the story didn’t hold me. I wasn’t rushing to see what happened next, and rather would turn certain sentences over in my head before moving to the next.

It’s a great book if you’re into that sort of thing. Me? It’s not my preference, but it was a change of scenery from fast-paced thrillers, so while it took me forever to read, I enjoyed it for what is was. I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone, and it’s definitely a mood read. I did better when I occasionally stepped away from it, and I read other books concurrently.*

I’d be curious to read more from the author, particularly her fairy tale retellings. I liked where this went, and I’m glad I took the time to enjoy this how it was meant to!

*I actually would recommend one of the books I paired, which happened to be The Secret Garden. It’s a classic and I really enjoyed the play between the stories and writing.32:T69c,A fun read that felt a little slow at the start but picked up speed and then the main character decided her fate and I love seeing the growth in her. She goes from being timid and biddable to finding her voice and strength in pretty scary ways. I do think she could have used another means to get out of the asylum but then again, her method was immediate and successful. But seriously, if anyone should discover or invent shorthand, it should happen in this book, where writing turns out to be super important.

There was a lot of story within the story which slowed it down a bit but ultimately helped to complete the story. I don't know how she would have learned about herself without the aid of dad's journal but I do love a story where the dad didn't leave, die or disappear but instead, keeps coming back as he does at the start and we learn how this dy
