While healing the captive birds, Daine discovers a new and terrifying dimension of her wild magic: She can bring dead creatures back to life. What is she to do with such immense power? Finding out the answer nearly costs Daine her life, but slowly she uncovers the darkness that is coursing through Carthak and the evil that threatens the fate of the peace treaty. As the gods plan vengeance on Carthak for the terrible deeds the empire has committed, Daine must learn to wield her newfound power to thwart their divine retaliation and secure peace for all of Tortall.

"3rd in the Daine series. Hands down my favorite books of her series. Daine, Alanna, Numair and Kitten travel as a delegation to the Emperor of Carthak in hopes to stave off war. Daine is here to hopefully cure his birds, but the gods seem have different plans. The Emperor has turned his back on the Gods and they are not happy. Lots of new friends and another humorous view into wildlife!"
"Pros:

I love when books put in important concepts and explore them in a way that can be separated from real life but related to it. In this book we get a glimpse of slavery and what goes into ending it. We also see how hard peace can be between different countries with different social structures and beliefs.

I really loved the little scenes between Diane and Alanna. It’s the little bits like that which connect the stories and build the world and make it so much more rich.

Cons:

I’m sure it comes in a later series in this world but I do wish at some point someone had discussed in more detail how the emperor became the man he is now. I can’t imagine he started off fully evil."
"Emperor Mage" is the third book in Tamora Pierce's "Immortals" quartet. It is a fantasy story about a young girl named Daine, who has the ability to communicate with animals and control their actions. In "Emperor Mage", Daine is called upon to use her powers to help the Emperor of Carthak, a powerful and dangerous man who is struggling to maintain control of his empire.

Throughout the book, Daine must navigate the treacherous world of court politics and intrigue while also trying to come to terms with her own growing powers. The story is full of action, adventure, and magic, and is suitable for readers of all ages."
