"Book 1 in excellent crime writing series set in 70s Belfast during the Troubles. The main character, Detective Duffy, is also Catholic, which adds a bit of tension to the Protestant-dominant police force. The first crime he investigates is a homosexual hate-crime (or is it?). The book contains some homosexual interactions and looks at homophobia from a crime perspective. It's well done but does depict the attitudes common to the era (so if certain terms or language make you wince, then maybe start with a later book in.the series). I particularly like McKinty's writing style. It's spare and straightforward but there's also a rumimative or light poetic style about it. Highly recommend! "
