Two best friends use their magic to save the world from war and corruption in Susan Dennard's New York Times bestselling YA fantasy, Truthwitch. On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a "witchery," a magical skill that sets them apart from others. In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safiya’s hotheaded impulsiveness.Safiya and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and privateer) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch."An instant new classic."--Sarah J. "3.8⭐️

Yes, that is a weird rating, but just roll with it.

Despite the constant mention of terms I don’t fully understand, the book is full of action.

This book feels like everything I’ve ever read before and something entirely new. It’s very much similar to every other modern YA fantasy novel out there.

Bottom line: It’s better than ”mid”, less than ”this is the best thing I have ever read”

Plus the cover is ✨beautiful✨."

"I like the book! Very easy and light read for a quick fantasy book. I adore the characters as well. I'm pretty sure this is a trilogy but might be mistaken the fourth book will make it a tetralogy... Worth checking it out if you're hungover from Sara J. Mass' Books, i know this series helped me get out of the reading rut...."
"Honestly, I almost didn't read this. Witches aren't one of my favorite paranormal people/creatures. But as I read the blurb I thought this didn't sound like witches as much as magical people so I thought I'd give it a try. Good choice! I really enjoyed this. I was swept up from the first page to the last. Though I was a bit mad at the end that I don't get to tear into the second book. I'm not a patient person so waiting for the next book is going to be agony.

I enjoyed the story between Safi and Iseult. Threadsisters. The bond between this one doesn't break easily. I enjoyed their adventure and to see them take care of the other. While they do get in trouble together, and maybe it's one of them getting them into trouble and one of them helping to get out, they still stick together.

I'm looking forward to the next one. This was definitely worth the read and I'm glad I didn't let the witch thing throw me off!"
"This is a high recommendation from me! It not only has elements of soulmates, an elemental magic system, and I would say good ethnical representation, but the best enemies to lovers arc as it’s been ongoing for 3-4 books and still hasn’t reached its peak. The slowest and most gratifying burn ever. #enemiestolovers #young_adult_fiction #youngadult "

Wow wow wow. I don’t know how to write this review because… wow. FEELINGS. This was a buddy read I did with my shiny wonderful friend Malanie and THANK GOD because it would have been a STRUGGLE to get through this book alone. But even though there were aspects of this book I didn’t like, I somehow ended up loving this??? Idk, I’m honestly super confused.

THE GOOD

The thing I was most impressed with was the world building because HOLY CRAP was it well thought out. There was a lot of stuff that confused me (more on that later), but even when I didn’t understand everything I could tell how much time Dennard put into this universe. The descriptions of the places, the people, the government, the religion… It was all there in great detail and I really loved it. Even when I was confused or frustrated, this world was so spectacular that it made me keep reading because I really wanted to understand it.

Also, the characters and relationships in this book gave me life. Iseult is my new girl crush because she was such a strong, badass mofo. And her friendship with Safi was so awesome to watch. Any time a book gives me those powerful female friendships I fall in love. Threadsisters and threadbrothers seem really similar to parabatai, so like SIGN ME UP. Mal and I also thought there was some serious threadbrother potential between Aeduan and Leopold and I NEED THAT IN MY LIFE. GIVE ME ALL THE FUZZY FRIENDSHIPS.

THE UGLY

I was just SO FREAKING CONFUSED THE ENTIRE TIME I WAS READING THIS!! It was so frustrating! From the very beginning, Dennard throws a ton of information at you without a whole lot of explanations and I did NOT know what was going on. I started listening to the audiobook, but then had to switch to my hardback copy so I could process the information better. One of the central conflicts is that 20 years ago, there was a huge war between the nations that ended when they came together to sign the Twenty-Year Truce to create peace. But obviously that’s coming to an end and everyone is freaking out and gearing up for another war. But no one EVER SAYS WHAT THEY’RE FIGHTING ABOUT???? Why was there a huge world war? Why are you all throwing yourselves into it again?? WHAT IS HAPPENING????? And there were a ton of smaller details that weren’t explained either. Like threadsisters and threadbrothers—how does that bond work? Do people choose their threadsibling, or is it something that forms on it’s own? And the Carawen Monks. What the HELL were the Carawen Monks?? They seemed like religious assassins???? Grrrrrr!!

And I need to take a moment to dump on Merik and Safi. Because that guy seriously needs to take a CHILL PILL and Safi needs to start actually THINKING things through. Safi just runs around doing whatever the hell she wants and then when **** hits the fan she’s all “Oops!”

Meanwhile, Merik needs to TONE IT DOWN. At one point Mal called him dramatic it’s really the best word to describe him. He might be the most dramatic queen I’ve ever read about, which was hilarious in the beginning, but got super old by the end. Dude needs to just STOP.

Live footage of Merik’s dramatic entrances and exits.

FINAL WORD

Despite all of my confusion and frustration, I ended up loving this??? The characters and world are so good, that I just HAVE to know what happens next.

#1 ↦ Truthwitch ↦ ✦✦✦✧✧
#2 ↦ [b:Windwitch|29939390|Windwitch (The Witchlands, #2)|Susan Dennard|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1462296317s/29939390.jpg|41438285] ↦ ?????
#2.5 ↦ [b:Sightwitch|35481848|Sightwitch (The Witchlands, #0.5)|Susan Dennard|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1503985079s/35481848.jpg|56877251] ↦ ?????
#3 ↦ [b:Bloodwitch|39863277|Bloodwitch (The Witchlands, #3)|Susan Dennard|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1537551594s/39863277.jpg|41438287] ↦ ?????"
"Decent fantasy book. The magic system was cool, but a bit too varied and broad. I had a hard time knowing what characters could do with their magic, though it was cool that every character had a different type of magic. The plot seemed a little scattered and hard to follow. The characterization was a little too heavy handed. The main characters felt pretty extreme emotions for not so extreme circumstances.

I listened to the audiobook. The narrator had kind of a strange Russian accent that she would use for every character’s dialogue, but not for the prose. Are we supposed to feel like all of the characters are Russian, despite them being different nationalities and speaking different languages?

I might pick up the next one. I might not."
"From the very first sentece to the ver last period, this book is filled with action. Every page turned will release new powers and a chase that means life and death to two characters. It's the first book of the series and will set the tone for how wonderfully written this series is."
