Unputdownable · Psychological Suspense · Horror · Tense · Gripping A FALLON BOOK CLUB PICK“Pulse-pounding locked-room suspense.” —Elle“Nightwatching is like nothing I've read before. I wolfed it down in two sittings; it's amazing.”—Lisa JewellA footstep on the stairs. A second to react. What happens next will determine everything. Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. She sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway, shrouded in the shadows. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall. There they hide as the man searches for them, trying to tempt the children out with promises and scare the mother into surrender. In the suffocating darkness, the mother struggles to remain calm, to plan. Should she search for a weapon or attempt escape? But then she catches another glimpse of him. That face. That voice. And at once she knows her situation is even more dire than she’d feared, because she knows exactly who he is—and what he wants.

"This book was interesting. It was a unique plot and I think written pretty well, but it wasn't the best I've read - it didn't keep me desperate to keep reading to find out what happens next. "

"Take my review with a grain of salt since I gave up just shy of half way through the book but this is the slowest of slow builds. The narrative jumping around made it hard to find a rhythm so I decided to stop. It’s possible I missed the book getting good but at the point I stopped, it definitely wasn’t in my opinion. "
"<i>“Easier to believe a woman’s lying than that bad things happened on your watch. Easier to believe the simplest thing is always correct. And it’s simple to say a woman is crazy.”</i><br/><b>- Tracy Sierra, Nightwatching</b><br/><br/>This book was the pick for the Fallon Book Club for April 2024. It was supposed to be read over a few weeks but I seemed to forget that... <br/><br/>I'm not sure if I should feel proud or offended that so many authors choose New England for their thriller/horror novels (kidding, I get it). Since so many people first settled in the area, having more scary things happen makes sense. The buildup was stretched a bit, but I can understand why they did that to make the reader question the MC. The outcome was not out of left field and the hints were dropped but not in such an obvious way that it was right in your face and the reader figures out what the outcome was well before in the end. <br/><br/>Creep factor? Check<br/>Family drama? Check<br/>Mysterious? Check<br/><br/>Without giving any spoilers, this is about a woman and her young children whose home is invaded one evening, and her struggles to deal with the stress of that and past issues within her family. Having a stranger invade your home in the middle of the night when it is just you and your two young children would be a parent's nightmare. This thriller tests the MC sanity and she has quite a troubled past. This invasion is the icing on the cake and she needs to keep her wits about her to keep her and her children safe. <br/><br/>This isn't super gorey, no spice, just a good creepy thriller that will make you double-check that you locked your house before going to bed or leaving. It was a quick read."
"This was the most infuriating thing I’ve ever read. Nothing happened other than a woman being gaslit by literally everyone and men being their incompetent, misogynistic, asshole selves for 300+ pages"

"I don't scare easily but from the first page, this book had me honestly terrified. <br/>it was also a rollercoaster-there were elements of "did she do it?", "is she imagining all this?"<br/>It had me HATING the gaslighting and the disbelieving police officers as well as her father in law.<br/><br/>Just a really good, scary and interesting read...if you dare!"
