In New York City where we lay our scene, two rival witch families fight to maintain control of their respective criminal ventures. On one side of the conflict are the Antonova sisters, each one beautiful, cunning, and ruthless, and their mother, the elusive supplier of premium intoxicants known only as Baba Yaga. On the other side, the influential Fedorov brothers serve their father, the crime boss known as Koschei the Deathless, whose community extortion ventures dominate the shadows of magical Manhattan. After twelve years of tenuous coexistence, a change in one family's interests causes a rift in the existing stalemate. When bad blood brings both families to the precipice of disaster, fate intervenes with a chance encounter, and in the aftershocks of a resurrected conflict, everyone must choose a side. As each of the siblings struggles to stake their claim, fraying loyalties threaten to rot each side from the inside out.If, that is, the enmity between empires doesn't destroy them first.

"Romeo and Juliet, modern day, with competing witch covens??? It doesn’t get much better than that! This book was amazing: extremely well written; poetic with layered parallels and symbolism. The characters were strong and distinct from one another, yet similar in the way they felt and experienced the world. The conflict engaging and fast paced. The story was broken up into acts with different sections, much like a play, which meant that as a reader you get quick changes of POV that keep you reading for hours at a time. Though it did start to slow down towards the end, that didn’t take away the essence of the story that keeps you wanting more. A fantastic read and a great way to end 2023! "
"Magic, Mafia, Mayhem, and Murder...

This was quite a ride. Written like a screenplay, in place of chapters, each new "scene" was introduced. A modern-day retelling of Romeo and Juliet with a twist of two powerful Russian witch families from NYC who have been kept under the radar of The Burrows Witch Council who keep all the witches of NYC in check. No magic in front of regular people. No misuse of magic.

The 3 Federov brother's sketchy family Antique business is managed under the firstborn heir named Dima for their kingpin father Koschei the Deathless.

The 7 gifted Antonova sisters with the clever and powerful firstborn heir named Masha running their successful little shop in Manhatten (with a little side business that is not so legal) on behalf of their powerful mother Baba Yaga have been quietly at odds for over a decade until one of the Federov boys made a poor decision to undermind the Antonova's which caused total chaos and a war was started.

A lot of characters are introduced in the beginning which I thought would be confusing and hard to follow but was pleasantly surprised that it was fairly easy to listen to and keep track of everyone.
The author slips in lines from the original play throughout the story also.

I'm glad I listened to it on Audible as I'm not sure it would have kept my interest in book form from the way it was written but also some of the male characters voices were a little annoying. Regardless, this was a very interesting spin on an old famous play. I did enjoy this book."
"I loved this book. It was a great interpretation of paranormal meets Romeo and Juliet. Though i feel it was lacking in some ways, it made up for that in the suspense. Amazing writing from the author. "
