A girl’s quest to find her father leads her to an extended family of magical fighting booksellers who police the mythical Old World of England when it intrudes on the modern world. From the bestselling master of teen fantasy, Garth Nix.In a slightly alternate London in 1983, Susan Arkshaw is looking for her father, a man she has never met. Crime boss Frank Thringley might be able to help her, but Susan doesn’t get time to ask Frank any questions before he is turned to dust by the prick of a silver hatpin in the hands of the outrageously attractive Merlin.Merlin is a young left-handed bookseller (one of the fighting ones), who with the right-handed booksellers (the intellectual ones), are an extended family of magical beings who police the mythic and legendary Old World when it intrudes on the modern world, in addition to running several bookshops.Susan’s search for her father begins with her mother’s possibly misremembered or misspelt surnames, a reading room ticket, and a silver cigarette case engraved with something that might be a coat of arms.Merlin has a quest of his own, to find the Old World entity who used ordinary criminals to kill his mother. As he and his sister, the right-handed bookseller Vivien, tread in the path of a botched or covered-up police investigation from years past, they find this quest strangely overlaps with Susan’s. Who or what was her father? Susan, Merlin, and Vivien must find out, as the Old World erupts dangerously into the New.

"This book is wondergul! I literally could not wait to get back to it! It has wonderful world building,: 1980's London with magical creatures out of mythology, a mysterious family organization of booksellers who "police" the magical world with right or left hands of magic. A heroine that many of us would gladly take the place of. (Ok, me. I would go live in this book in 5 seconds!) Who is searching for her long lost father. And the Metropolitan police of London who work with the Booksellers to try and keep the magical world's secrets from the humans. This all comes together in an exciting, attention grabbing plot that I do not want to spoil for you. Just believe mhen I say get your hands on a copy and lose a weekend. I will be adding this jewel to my collection of " REREAD WHEN BORED. OR SAD. OR HAPPY. OH JUST READ IT!" Books. Thank you Garth Nix for making this election week seem far, far away from here. "
"Meh. It was ok & had a lot of interesting ideas…kind of felt like a Neil Gaiman type book but it just didn’t capture me. It felt way longer than necessary. A lot of the world & powers weren’t explained. Since the main character seemed to just understand everything right way & not question it, the author expected the reader to do the same. It basically felt like being dropped in the middle of the story & felt like playing catch up trying to figure things out for the first half of the book…almost like this was a 3rd or 4th book in a series & not the first. For the first couple of chapters, I kept wandering if I had started listening part way through the book or if I had completely spaced out for a chapter or two & missed how I ended up here. Which, I guess is an interesting & can be a fun way to start a book but I didn’t feel like it worked here. There was also some really silly things that even in a magical world wouldn’t make sense that I struggled to get passed & just accept it & move on.

Im giving it 3 stars because it isn’t a bad book but it also isn’t one I’d necessarily recommend."
