"This film is an experience but it’s not going to be for everyone. Alex Garland, the director of Civil War, and Ray Mendoza, a soldier involved in the battle, co-wrote and directed this film about a fire fight and exfiltration in Iraq. The film is an attempt to have you experience the incident as viscerally and accurately as possible.
Like Civil War, the context of the situation they’re in isn’t spelled out. The opening title card says they are a Navy Seal unit providing support and reconnaissance for another unit. You never learn what the nature of the operation was. It’s hard for actors to stand out in a film like this. Most of the dialogue is either technical military communication with headquarters or their drone unit or quickly shouted instructions. There just aren’t a lot of “look at me” moments.
The real standout aspect of the film is its control of tone. There is a building sense of dread as the activity in the surrounding buildings grows more suspicious. The chaos that engulf the building as fighting starts is palpable. There are moments in this film where the sound mix’s auditory stimulation is so intentionally overwhelming that it makes you very uncomfortable.
The film doesn’t have a classic narrative structure, which will leave some people asking “What was the point?” However, I think they’re less interested in telling you a story than have you feel it, which is the unique power that cinema has.
