"Meriwether Lewis was a fascinating man, yet I found this book to be something of a slog. I'm not entirely sure why....is it because Lewis was also something of a mystery, and we'll never really know why he made some of the decisions he did or what he was thinking? Is it because it uses liberal quotes from journals and letters from the time (although most of the history books I read do this and it normally doesn't slow me down)? Is it because I'm more interested in learning about the people than I am in the minutia of the famous Lewis and Clark trip? Perhaps the book just got depressing, as we see the continued bad behavior from the white Americans toward the black and indigenous people they encounter. Whatever the reason, I'm glad to be through this book."
