She knows just how to get it- by volunteering to be his next bride. Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph's reign of terror once and for all. "I really enjoyed this romantasy set in the Middle East. Totally gave me Aladdin vibes, with more maturity. The magic was subtle, and romance is a slow burn enemies to lovers. I enjoyed the unique tone of the novel but was devastated by the cliff-hanger. Will definitely need to read the sequel in this duology. Slight TW towards the beginning of sexual abuse, but relatively subtle and doesn't harp on it. This is NOT a spicy romance if that's what you're looking for, but it really has great character depth and makes you fall in love along with the MC. "
"This book is everything I never knew I would want from it. The story is done beautifully and even though at the start I thought I wouldn’t enjoy reading it, I loved it. The denouement is beyond comparison. The whole story is almost reminiscent of Beauty: a retelling of beauty and the beast, but it is almost better if I had to stretch. Perfect in its entirety. 15+ for brief mention of sex. "
"This book was honestly very hard to understand and as a result even though I got about halfway through it, I had to stop and give up.
To begin, the plot lost me. I was under the impression the book was about a girl who married a cruel murderous king to get revenge for her best friend’s death. However, she doesn’t really stick to this ideal very long and starts falling for the king even though he barely pays her any attention. And even without that, the plot just seems all over the place and hard to follow probably because it seems like one doesn’t exist in the first place.
In addition, there is a lot of terms, titles, and vocabulary for weapons, items, and various statuses of the characters that are poorly defined so it was hard as someone without an Arabic background to follow along when I felt like fifty new terms kept popping up every chapter. And the way they are introduced I couldn’t understand or use context clues to figure it out.
Overall I gave it one star. This book was not personally my cup of tea.

"Reading this book was a little out of my comfort zone, but surprisingly i still liked it. I loved the main character Shahrzad, i thought she was the perfect mix of badass and hopeless romantic. When i was reading the first couple chapters i was wondering how this romance was going to happen due to the situation, but in the end it's what made their love stronger."
"Such a good book, a bit of enemies to lovers vibes. Leaves off on a cliffhanger, I love it so much! "
