"South of the Border, West of the Sun follows Hajime, from childhood and into adulthood. From young love and into his complicated adult relationships. <br/><br/>Hajime never forgot his childhood friend, his first crush, and the bond he shared with his classmate, Shimamoto. <br/>After losing touch with Shimamoto for over 20 years, he compared all of his relationships to Shimamoto and he fell short of happiness without her. <br/><br/>To me, Hajime's story felt like it was about chasing the impossible. His story displayed a lack of hopefulness and happiness. He made up such impossible standards for himself and was mostly an unhappy, depressed person.<br/><br/>When he had it all, he would simply mess it up by hurting the people that loved him. <br/> Nothing was ever enough, as is the case with most unhappy people. I guess life sometimes just simply seems mundane, and this book sort of captured that vibe."
