TY: Pretty Thing--the moment Liam McKinney first uttered those words will be embedded in my mind forever. He's mysterious, intriguing...and off-limits since he's my father's friend. Easier said than done. The moment I laid eyes on the man with the dark eyes and intense stare, he awoke a primal hunger within me unlike anything I'd ever experienced before. For some time, I've been confused about my attraction toward men, but there's no confusion when I look at him--just pure, unfettered desire to feel his body against mine, taste his flesh, breathe in his scent. So many things an experienced man like Liam could show me. But I don't just want to sate my desire for his body--the physique of a Titan, those abs practically chiseled from stone, and one particular challenge that looks more than slightly intimidating...Yes, I want all that, but also so much more. To know everything about him. There's something behind the facade he presents to the world. Sometimes, it's as though I'm offered a glimpse behind the smokescreen--to who he really is. Yet it's tricky to know the real Liam when he's determined to keep his secrets. I assumed he had a dark past. But I didn't realize he hadn't left it behind and that I'd wind up roped into it--into a dangerous world so different from the one I've spent most my life living. It's a world of secrets, deception, and peril. I quickly discover there's a price to being with Liam McKinney. But no price is too great when the reward is being the man in his arms and his heart. Being his very own Pretty Thing. *Pretty Things features two men who can't get enough of each other, action/adventure involving secret government agencies and nefarious conspiracies, and sexy shenanigans that'll make it impossible for you to forget you're in a Devon McCormack novel. The book contains references to suicidal ideation and scenes of peril that could act as triggers for some readers.

"Let me start by saying I am a fan of Devon McCormack’s writing. I LOVED the BFF series (solid 5 stars) and I have also enjoyed the books he co-wrote with Riley Hart. But I can’t say I loved this book (3.5 stars) even though I wanted to.

First the great: The sex scenes were hot. I am glad that the author chose to interject some comic relief in the form of Liam’s team, and their interactions. It was a really good break amongst the otherwise heavy and dark themes. The complexity of the Liam’s and Ty’s characters, both individually and as a couple, was great!! Love story was poignant. Larger than life storyline that had sooooo much potential! These great things are part of the reason the book was a disappointment. There was too much covered in a short amount of time.

Now the not so great: Ty was a complex character, but in an attempt to make him seem mature and unaffected, he almost came across as flip. I would have preferred more internal dialogue where Ty acknowledged the gravity of the situation, but made a decision to compartmentalize his feelings in order to help Liam. The overall tempo was off putting. I would say the romance was a slow burn, if by slow burn you mean the speed at which something cooks in a crockpot on the low setting. The extended game of cat and mouse, and subsequent begging by Ty, became annoying. The sexy begging that made its way into their bedroom shenanigans after they became a couple-hot. The “please date me” begging-not so much. At some point Ty went from persistent and sardonic to desperate and self denigrating. But once the MCs became a couple, we saw the story do from 1st to 5th gear in 2.5 seconds. And if the wait for the physical relationship wasn’t excruciating enough, there was the wait for the kiss....sorry, I was watching my grass grow. The after the backstory, Liam’s reticence to kiss Ty made complete sense, but the constant, “I want to and he wants me to, but I won’t” was unnecessary. I would have preferred the conflict be more “he wants me to, but I can’t”. Then the story rushed into, meet parents, (as a couple), reveal relationship, get kidnapped, resolve issue, and become martial arts student within the span of three chapters, wow!

Overall: I really like these characters and I am invested in them. But this book did not do them justice. This story was too big for the one book. I would like to see their story continue in order to see Ty resolve some of his internal struggles re: identity. Yes he became more comfortable with his sexual orientation, but the rushed resolution left you wondering how he felt in his professional life. It would be nice to see dialogue with dad and Jesse re: his ability to empathize with their love story after falling in love with Liam. I would also like to see Ty address his PTSD."
