“Brilliant . . . Larry Brown has slapped his own fresh tattoo on the big right arm of Southern Lit.” —The Washington Post Book WorldNow a major motion picture starring Nicolas Cage, directed by David Gordon Green. Joe Ransom is a hard-drinking ex-con pushing fifty who just won’t slow down--not in his pickup, not with a gun, and certainly not with women. Gary Jones estimates his own age to be about fifteen. Born luckless, he is the son of a hopeless, homeless wandering family, and he’s desperate for a way out. When their paths cross, Joe offers him a chance just as his own chances have dwindled to almost nothing. Together they follow a twisting map to redemption--or ruin.

"I thoroughly enjoyed reading Joe. It’s really hard to express my feelings on this book. I immediately bout into the main characters and while there is no plot, I was sold a few pages in on the story. Just when I had moments of doubt with the story, something would happen or Joe would be Joe and I’m hooked back in. It was like the Road meets a dash of No Country with all the right amounts of the southern grit feel. The ending left me feeling like I missed something and too open ended for my liking. I actually had to immediately watch the movie to see if there was something I missed. I think the movie got it right. I actually think the book and movie should go together. You have to ingest both as a whole.

One of the rare books where the characters sum up the book and not the plot or lack there of.

I e been in a southern gritty vile vibe and this was a good addition. 100% worth the read. BIG TIME"
