Book 3 of this adult fantasy series continues in this epic story inspired by the myth of King Midas, fae, fated romance, and insurmountable greed. "I don't choose him. Not anymore. I'm choosing me." King Midas made me the woman I am today. Notorious. Unattainable. His. The thing about being confined is that you believe it's to keep the bad out. ...Until you realize it's about keeping you in. I'm now in a strange kingdom surrounded by liars, with no allies of my own, but I won't sit idly by and let myself wither. No, there's something that's bloomed from the pit of my repression. Something dark. Something angry. But the last thing I expected was for my anger to call out to him. King Ravinger. He's sinister and powerful and entirely too seductive. I've learned my lesson with trusting manipulative kings, so why does my chest constrict every time he's near? I need to tread carefully, or I'm at risk of losing much more than just my freedom. Regret and revenge war inside of me, and I need to figure out a plan fast before I get tangled up in the schemes of kings and queens. Because I won't be caught in a cage again. No, this time, it'll be me setting the trap. ...I just hope my heart comes out of this unscathed. Please note: This is an adult fantasy series with dark elements that may be triggering, as well as explicit scenes.

"The Long-winded rants were tolerable at first but now they are stacking on one another. I'm getting agitated here. It is taken Auren too many books to get her **** together and it's chipping away at my nerves. Also the slow burn romance has gone on so long its starting to fizzle out for me. This whole series has been balancing on the edge of a knife. I am intrigued but I'm so close to calling it quits as well.

Apparently it seems the author lost sight of the plot due to all the angst. The dirty talk was too much and I don't know if it's just me but highly unrealistic.

“Don’t fall.” Time stands still as he leans in and places a kiss on my temple, lips turning to whisper into my ear. “Fly.”

This was cheesy as hell and I can't even post the bedroom talk it was bazaar. Honestly Rip is trying to be this "I'm a feminist hear me roar" type stuff then in the bedroom he is like "You'll do whatever the hell I say woman".

Again I liked getting to know the Wraths a little more. The comradery is fun. But you get no ones backstory besides Auren's and it makes the rest of the characters very shallow in comparison. After all this time the characters need more depth. Rip is a total mystery. While Auren is being pummeled with questions he doesn't tell one damn secret, even one piece of past has yet to be revealed. Let me remind you this is book 3.

It was strange at the beginning to look at piece of clothing like being apart of oneself. So much happened in the dress Auren wore. The story got harder to predict which I applaud because the last one was easy. There was a big reveal that I did see coming I just didn't know how it would manifest. I'm going to try not to ramble but the repetition gave me such a headache. Needless words filled this book when it should have been replaced by character arcs and backgrounds."
"I think we’re turning a corner here. This one had a bit more flavor to it. I think it’s the army that I’m enjoying the most. These other characters are really adding something to the story. "

"Why was almost every character insufferable in this book?

Malina: is shocked that her citizens are rioting and blames it all on Midas.
Also Malina: tells her guards to slaughter all if her subjects for daring to disagree with her.

Midas: doesn’t understand why Auren could possibly dislike him.
Also Midas: physically abuses her, controls her, forces her to take drugs, and emotionally abuses her as well.

Auren: is confused when Midas is not happy she has become a new person
Also Auren: tells someone who has been controlling her every move for 10 years she no longer needs him.

I’m not justifying what Midas did in anyway. I’m just stunned that we’re acting confused by it?! Like OF COURSE HE WASNT HAPPY?!?!"

I really enjoyed this book! I believe the series gets so much better with Gleam, and I was nothing short of impressed from Kennedy’s improvement in story development and writing. However, I wasn’t super satisfied with the ending, especially how Auren and Midas met their conclusion. Personally, I wanted Auren to get sweet and bitter revenge against her decade-long tormentor, but I felt that her killing Midas was instead wildly theatrical and ill-fitting for her (the gilded kiss on the cheek… c’mon, that was corny). Now that the monarchs think she stole Midas’ power and she is a wanted criminal for his murder, my satisfaction has been erased. The added stress of her losing control of her powers and being afraid overshadowed my contentment at Midas’ death. Instead, I would have loved for them to battle when Auren gained control of her powers so she could properly kick his ass. I think Auren deserved to have her kill but not have it be tainted with her new problems. I knocked down half a star solely for the dramatic grandness of Midas’ death - I didn’t think it wasn’t reflective of Auren’s fury or her fear that she experienced in the moments before and after the act. The resulting battle scene of her gaining and losing control of her powers in the same swoop was difficult to read (because I’m rooting for Auren!), but did not affect my review.
Otherwise, this book is amazing! I also consumed this book in almost a day, needing more and more. I love how Auren and Slade came together and explored their feelings for each other, it was sweet and romantic. Auren’s ribbons were a gutwrenching and horrible loss, and I am eager to see how she grows from the heartache and learns to master her powers. It can only go up from here, right? Right?
On to the next, not even waiting!"
